The cost of creating a tool large enough to mold sizable medical parts is exponentially higher for injection molding than for reaction injection molding. As such, even though the price to create each part may be higher with RIM than other molding processes such as injection molding, the low cost of the large tooling that is required significantly offsets the overall cost of production. In addition to resisting wear and tear, reaction injection molded parts are also chemically resistant. Many of the coatings used in the production of reaction injection molded parts stand up to chemicals well without harming the part in any way. As such, a wide variety of cleaners and solvents can be used with reaction injection molded parts. Such a capacity is ideal for medical devices that must be cleaned and sanitized frequently with a wide variety of potentially harsh disinfectants.


Medical devices are highly complex. As a result, they often consist of a multitude of different parts that must be attached together. When creating complex medical devices with other molding processes, there are often several parting lines in the product wherever the many different parts are attached together. When creating parts through reaction injection molding, however, you have the ability to mold parts together so that the device effectively consists of fewer parts.

When there are fewer seams and parting lines in a part, there are fewer opportunities for dirt, dust, and other unwanted pollutants to collect in the small cracks.
